Soaring the Florida Skies Since 1966
The North Florida Soaring Society (NFSS) was originally organized in 1966 by six Jacksonville soaring enthusiasts, and was first located at Fernandina Airport in Florida. The original fleet consisted of a single glider. As related by one of the early club members, there was little actual soaring being accomplished. Many flights resulted in gliding back to the airport shortly after takeoff.
NFSS relocated to Herlong Airport in 1967. Another group of Jacksonville sailplane enthusiasts, Sailplanes Inc., had formed in the same year and operated just a few miles away at Craig Airport. The two clubs agreed to merge, and in 1968 a new North Florida Soaring Society was born. Some of the original members of both the North Florida Soaring Society and Sailplanes Inc. are still active with the club today!
